Belfast in Brief

Belfast began as a town in the early 17th century. The name meaning mouth of the
sandy ford. The town grew up after 1603 when king James began his policy of settling Englishmen and Scots in Ulster.

Belfast prospered during the 1800 due to linen and shipbuilding. French protestants, fleeing religious persecution in their own country, introduced linen weaving and shipbuilding began in 1791. By the late 17th century Belfast had a population of 1,500-2,000.

Belfast made a city in 1888

Belfast bombed by Germany 1941

1960s Industry in decline led to mass unemployment.

1969 violence erupts in Northern Ireland.

1996 IRA announce ceasefire.

1998 Good Friday Agreement signed.
Current population – 350,000.

2004 - Powersharing Executive suspended

2005 - IRA disband.
